In This Issue

President's Message

George Szondy
Abbey Tent & Party Rental

Friends, Renters, Tenters; lend me your ears. The past two years as MATRA president have been a true honor; from conference calls and board meetings, to the annual shows I have enjoyed every step. The actual work that goes into the running of this organization is inspiring and it takes each one of us to make it happen. I would like to thank all of our sponsors, whose constant support makes much of what we do possible. Our business benefits from getting to know each other and learning from not only past victories, but mistakes as well. In the constant battle with Mother Nature and the full article

Executive Corner
Michael Tannen, CSEP,
Executive Director

What a great year for the rental industry, especially the tent rental industry. I can’t tell you how many times during the year I heard the same comments, "I think the rental season has gotten longer this year” or "I’ll get to registering for the conference once I get a breather here” or "We don’t have any slow season any longer” or, my favorite "Tannen, you were next on my list”. Ok, maybe that was more personal for me and our President, George Szondy. Bryan "You were next on my list” Bolt from TopTec Products, a hard working board member, who seemed to always be busy, either on TopTec work or MATRA. Busy seasons and growing organizations like MATRA means sometimes you have to create that call back list during busy days.In the last few months, I was able to represent MATRA at a few Training Conferences of our the full article including my 2013 Hanukkah wishes...

MATRA 2013 Annual Conference and Trade Show

The MATRA Annual Conference was, once again, hosted by the beautiful Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Dover, Delaware. Not only did we occupy the entire Parking Lot H of the Hotel, but we had to expand further into the adjacent parking lot to accommodate our MATRA Live Auction tent! The weather was great until, of course, rain and colder air for takedown on Thursday. Over 400 attendees gathered during the four day event. Monday and Tuesday showcased the hands-on tent installations and a four hour IFAI Bootcamp session which concentrated on safety, site surveys, Crew Chief challenges, conflict management and reactions to emergency situations.  Featured again was our smaller tent display known as "Tent Village”.

The Education Committee presented excellent sessions ranging from event rental company logistics, OSHA Regulations/Compliance, Cloud computing, Hiring using Forensic Psychology, to power implementation, bidding strategies and lighting 101. All sessions were well attended and everyone gained new knowledge in one educational area or the other.

The Hall of Honor Award, recognizing his many years and contributions in the tent rental industry, was presented to Michael Tharpe, TopTec Products.   Again, the ever popular and much anticipated MATRA Games Winners were also announced.  With over 80 participants, the field to capture the Golden Sledgehammer for 2013 was extremely intense. With competition in nine different categories, including the addition of the one man sledgehammer throw, attendees had to be the the full article to see the list of award recipients and photos...

An IPad was given away by Mainline Carpets during the conference and the winner was Joe Hynes from Northeast Tent Productions, Stamford, CT.

Paddled Boards.

Dodge Ball Tournament at Conference to support the MATRA Scholarship Program

A new athletic competition was added to the 2013 MATRA Conference this year. Over eight teams participated in the tournament which took place in addition to the MATRA Games. Some teams were formed prior to the conference but others gathered on site to form the required team of six players for the competition. Several of the teams chose names which were designed to intimidate their competitors such as, "4 lb. Sledge Hammers”, "The X-Men” and the "Worcester Woodpeckers”, to name a few!  Competition was fierce and very physical.  John Creedon and Dan Dalton served as referees and reported that there were no major injuries! Proceeds from the Dodge Ball Tournament go to the MATRA Scholarship Fund and the winning team, "BP Bandits”, won $300.00.

MATRA Auction a Success

The MATRA Organization held its first live Tent Auction at this year’s MATRA Conference in Dover, DE. The Auction was created and viewed as an opportunity to raise money for our association, and to expand on the benefits of being or becoming a member. Officially, there were two hundred and ten lots; some with multiple items and some with just a single item. Products included:   catering items, linens, dozens of used and new tents, heaters, tables and chairs, hardware, and a 9mx6m Structure from Liri Tent and Total Tent Solutions which $850.00 of the proceeds were donated to the MATRA Scholarship Fund. Although the MATRA Auction’s debut was not as well attended as we had hoped, we still view it as a successful endeavor and a new, additional MATRA member benefit. If and when the MATRA Auction is held again, we look forward to making noted adjustments to ensure its quality and benefit to the MATRA community. We would like to thank everyone who participated, and highly encourage your feedback. In addition, we would like to acknowledge Fred Tracy, Fred’s Tents, and his staff for the extraordinary amount of work it took to put this Auction together and produce on site and we are extremely grateful for all of their efforts in organizing this event.
